For sweet ants: Wash things down with bleach or even vinegar, everywhere you've seen them crawl. You can use cinnamon or bay leaves in cupboards and stuff to repel them. Find out what they're eating and get rid of it.
No experience with carpenter ants, you might want to get your foundation sprayed, as they can cause lots of damage. Good luck!
For most ants you need to use a bait that they carry back to the nest so all the ants die. I have tried several and found Terro liquid bait to be very effective. The traps are clear and you can see the ants going in and out.
Carpenter ants live in moist wood. You might have a leak somewhere so you should find the wet wood and replace it. If you can find the nest spray with insecticide. Sometimes you can even hear them munching away if you put your ear to the wall.
We suffer from ants in New Zealand to. Two things that are good. First- Semolina. This is a food product. Put semolina in jam jar lids on ground or where ants are coming in. They will eat it,and carry it back to nest. Only trouble for ants, they can't digest it, so they will die. Other good thing is Talcum powder. The smellier the better. Sprinkle it around your home, and they will keep away. And if you spray Household Bleach around window frames etc,it will keep most insects out. Good Luck!
Home remedies for ants:
Wash down everywhere you have seen them with Borax, it is hard to find this stuff, so you may have to have a store special order it for you. If a store has it, it is usually in the isle with laundry soap.
Spray them with hairspray, be carefull not to spray near pilot lights if you have a gas stove in your kitchen, or anything else that will cause the ants or your can of hairspray to catch fire. The hairspray suffocates them, so be prepared to vacuum up dead ant bodies, this works on most insects.
If you have a Chinese grocery in your area stop in and ask them about ant remedies, my sister got a product there once that you marked a chalk line of it around your rooms and it kept the bugs away, but I can't remember what it is called, and the label is in Chinese, which we can't read.
You may have to have a professional come out if you have a lot of carpenter ants. One or two may have just wandered in from outside, but if you see a lot, then you have a problem and need to have a professional look at your foundation. There are environmentally friendly pest control places that can get rid of them without making you have to leave the house to fumigate.
Good luck with the crawly critters.
