Are you talking false drop ceiling, or shower ceiling?
I only know showers, so here's my advise. Get thin tile or stone. Standard is 3/8", don't go thicker than that. Don't go bigger than a 12"x12" either. Apply your liquid nails type thinset and set it in. Use painters tape to hold all of the pieces in and together. Grout and finish as usual. Make sure you use a step stool, you want to be able to move closer and farther away without strain. Good Luck.
