What is the difference between Grout and Mortar?

Question:I have two huge bags of mortar in my garage and I was wondering if it would be OK to use as Grout for a mosaic art project?
Or is it something totally different?

Answers:
mortar is for sticking bricks together. grout isn't expensive so i'd go and buy some. plus with the grout you can get it as adhesive/grout all in one and in different colours too!

Mortar is for bricks, it is very coarse, and grout is smoother. To use with tiles.
Mortar is used to adhere tiles to a surface. Grout is used to fill in the spaces between the tiles. Grout is usually a finer texture and tinted in different colors. Mortar is usually gray and course like concrete.
No, mortar acts to bind items together such as brick or blocks. Grout is used to fill in space such as between shower or floor tiles.
Mortar is the stuff that bonds they two and grout is the filler, it doesn't really bond. So if you were doing tile you would use the mortar to the back of the tile and where you were putting it and the once it is dry you would groute the spaces detween the tiles. Mortar is used also for masonry like bricks and stone. I don't believe they use grout for their talent.
mortar is a concrete based adhesive that bonds the tile or stone to the subfloor. Grout is the material in between the tile or stone. It usually comes sanded or unsanded and it should have latex in it to allow the tile or stone to "flex"
