You might need to wash them out. Remove the cover and spray the internals with a bleach mixture. Rinse with water. Be sure to avoid or cover the electricals. Allow to drain and dry before starting back up. Make sure the units are allowed to sit in the normal position before starting to allow the oil to run to the normal spots.
Remove the front cover after you have unplugged the window unit. Mix up a solution consisting of 1/4 cup bleach, 32 ounces of water, and 1 drop of liquid dish detergent. Put the ingredients into a spray bottle and spray directly on the front of the coil and let sit for a minute. Gently brush down the coil and spray again. Repeat this until the coil is visibly clean. If the unit is properly installed all of the cleaning solution should drain to a location outside the house. Clean the air filter and reinstall the cover. Plug the unit into the pwer supply and turn it on. Since the room you are trying to cool is warmer than the coil, the coil will automatically form condensation and self-rinse.
Try putting a fabric softner sheet on the filter when you put a new one in. It helps if you change or clean the filter often.
