When painting aluminum siding is a primer suppose to be used.?
Question:I am afraid to use a sprayer because I don't want to get paint on my neighbors houses. can a brush or a roller be used instead to paint aluminum siding.
Answers:
If you apply the paint to thick with a brush or roller you can clog the weep holes and keep the siding from being able to expand and contract, soon there will be a problem with rot under the siding.
yes you do need to use primer talk to locale paint store for the primer for alum, and yes you can use a brush or roller
Assuming the siding was painted before then you are actually painting paint. If the old paint is chalky, or glossy, I would use a primer like Zinsser 123. It never hurts to prime, and it usually gives a better looking finish coat. A lot of times you may need two coats of paint and primer is cheaper than paint. If you are painting a dark or vivid color as a finish coat have your paint store color the primer for you. You can use a low nap roller, a pad painter, and a brush. Be sure to use latex (water based) paint as aluminum siding can stretch and shrink in the sun. Latex paints are flexible and will accommodate movement. Oil base paints crack and blister. If you have any existing cracking, or peeling paint you'll have to scrape or sand it to remove anything loose.
For the paint to stay you need to first power-wash the siding to remove dirt and powder, (slide your finger across a piece of the siding, look at your finger, and you'll see what I'm talking about). Paint won't stick unless you have a clean surface. Then prime the surface with a quality primer, then your paint job will look good.
There is no sense in starting the project unless your going to do the best job you can do. The prep work is the hardest, but it is the most important.
You can use a sprayer if you are the carefull sort, but if you don't feel you are, then stick to a brush and roller.
you will need to wash the aluminum with TSP rinse all residue prime with bullseye 123 waterbase let dry 24 hours and apply finish paint of choice
