We use both. It depends on the application. what are you using it for, where, and what are you covering it with?

I am right in the middle of tiling my first tub enclosure. I used a product called hardybacker under the tiles. It screws on the wall with special screws (they remind me of deck screws) and you tape the seams with thinset over alkali-resistant fiberglass tape. No need to cover the screw heads if they are going to be tiled over.

This stuff seems to be stable and provides a good surface for thinset to adhere to. Heavier than greenboard, but probably lighter than cement board. It also flexes a tiny bit. The company said that you could score it on both sides and snap it, but when I did that I didn't get real clean breaks (the margin was rough). I found it very difficult to score and snap a narrow piece off of the edge - ended up using a drywall handsaw for the narrow cuts. It comes in 1/4 inch and 1/2 sizes at Home Depot.

I am a rookie at this stuff, and have no other experience to draw upon, but I would say that the Hardybacker is working okay.
