I HIRE A CARPENTER>
Is this a wood patio or a concrete patio? Are you going to attach this to the house or other structure, or does it stand alone? What type of roof were you thinking about - shingled, steel, fibergalss panels or other? Do you live in an area where you must consider "snow load" in the winter? These are very big questions that need to be answered before you can get really good help.
But, I will give you some generic ideas. First if you want to out a roof over your patio you must have support for the roof structure. Not necessarily meaning walls, but should have posts on the corners with structural beams for your rafters to sit on. Now if you are attaching the roof to the side of your house then you will only need posts on the outer corners depending on the size of the deck. You could get some free assistance with that from your material supplier - even the guys at the building materials desks at the major stores like Lowes should be able to help with that.
Once you have your beams in place, you can set your rafters and apply the roofing materials.
This is only a few helpful instructions, there are many more things that I could help you with but without more information, I just can not without writing instructions for every possible situation I can think of and that could take several hours or even days.
Your best bet might be to consult with a contractor. This could be an easy DYI project but could also be a nightmare for the DYI person depending on those questions I asked in the beginning. Outside of getting the roof tied into an existing roof or structure, this is a very doable project for you and a couple skilled friends. You just haven't given us enough information to help you as good as I am sure many of us here could.
I almost forgot about the need for you to see if your city has a building code referring to adding a roof to your patio. Certain building codes can change everything about how you can or if you can put the roof on.
I hope that I helped more than confused you. I wish I could do better for you but I need more details about your patio.
