What kind of pump would i need?
Question:this weekend we are going to instal a fish pond at my house and it will be a whole one but with a step down pool creating two seperate sections. we have alot of rock to go around it and what i am wanting is a fast moving waterfall created of huge rocks running into the first pond then water flowing from the first pond into another deeper pond. the whole area i have to work with is about 12'L x 8'W. how big of a pump will i need to ensure that i get a heavy waterfall from the rocks at the top end of the pond?

lets keep it simple.
go to Lowes or HD, they have a wide selection from 60gph to 400 gph.
pick one that matches your pond size and then go to the next highest size if cost isnt a big issue- you can always turn the volume down on them if they put out too much water.
height is an issue, but if you stay around a foot in head height you should be fine
if it's a decent size(the pond) somewhere around 300 plus gallons usually will do, plus dont use ones that only allow a 1/2" hose, use one with a bigger hose - more volume for the waterfall effect
i am jealous. sounds like a great pond. in order to determine pump size you will have to figure how many gallons per minute u are going to have to move. additionally, the gpm rate is affected by the lift height, ie how high the water is being raised. check out drs. foster and smith. they have the best deals on pond pumps. you will save alot of money vs buying it at your local pet store. u should also consider a uv filter. i have enclosed the www where they link you to pump info. good luck. ps. watch out for those herons. they think koi are tasty.
Here is a website that will be of some use to you. www.pondmart.com It has a pond calculator that will tell you the approximate size liner, filter, and pump you will need to have a successful pond.
