Use Bin primer. It covers and seals in any odor.

Yeah. You don't. Wipe off as much as you can and sublimate the rest with Zinssers "stain killer" BIN like Rob89434 said. Use the exterior stuff even if the damage is on the interior of the building. (The interior version is kind of wimpy in comparison)

All I would say further is that you can add a little vanilla extract to the wallpaint, it kills whatever smokey smell remains.
