start at the bottom and work your way up.by rows...going left to right...
You're probably talking about the very first row at the bottom. This may seem like a little more work but it will save grief later. Cut the tabs off the shingles even with the top of the slot. Use this new cut edge even with the gutter apron at the bottom edge of the roof. Then shinlge as shown on the instructions. The reason for cutting off the tabs is that the part shingle you start with will have the "seal strip" for wind resistance at very bottom edge and will prevent the shingles from lifting in the wind like the rest of the shingles are protected.
After the new drip edge is installed all around, assuming this is the only layer of shingles on your roof. Start at the eve with a row of upside down shingles and then flip another over the top of that row. Make sure you stagger the verticle laps, and work your way up stepping back your verticle laps to land on the previous shingle layed below. The cuts at the gable side you can use on the other gable side of the roof if needed to save on product.
If an overlay, make sure you use long enough nails. Generally, you can overlay an existing roof twice before you have to remove them all and start new again at the decking.
Check with your homeowners insurance. Depending on the area of the country, some will not insure overlays.
