What is a cheap way to soundproof a window?

Question:I am night shifter and there are children who play outside my apartment. I would simply like to hear some ideas on cost-effective ways of deadening the noise. Would plain old styrofoam-type insulation work?
Heavy drapes are pretty much out of the question.
Thanks.

Answers:
Styrofoam will work and so will cork board. Make sure you cut to cover whole window. Heavy drapes will not cut down on the sound. If it is coming through the walls that may be a problem but the windows = use styrofoam and cut it alittle bigger that the window itself. Good luck.

Styrofoam would work, but don't leave it exposed on the inside - it's a safety hazard if you ever have a fire in the room.
i would go with just foam padding at jo-anne fabrics. then find some wood and build a box to suff it in and hang it over the window. styrofoam would squeak were as foam is soft and would absorb the sound better...example old sound studios used egg create foam to deaden the sound.
Hi I have a one year old who naps through the day and I have placed a couple of old mattresses against his window because my neighbors like to make noise the same time as his nap time and at night we have some lovely dogs that bark alot. It doesn't cut alot out but helps abit. Otherwise double glass but i think that's costly but may be cheap at a demolition store. I also find if you use something that has one steady sound its easier to sleep and helps to make outside noise not as noticeable or perhaps play some music. If all fails there is always earplugs. All the best on your peaceful endeavors.
