Using welding equipment?
Question:Is brazing the most simple form of welding & the cheapest? and what type of equipment do you need to carry out brazing?
Answers:
It depends on what you are welding. Steel is welded with an arc or wire welder. Copper and other precious metals are brazed.
If you want to do some brazing then you will need torches that will get the material hot enough to melt the metals together.
For brazing, you need an oxy/acetylene set up with gauges and hose. You also need various size brazing/welding tips so you can do different size jobs. Also need brazing flux. Sice it takes a high amount of heat to braze, it is not good for thin metals. Warpage is brazings biggest downside. I think Mig welding is the best all-around welding technique.
Brazing is usually done with a regular oxy-aceteline outfit. It doesn't need as much heat as welding, but is not nearly as strong, either, presuming you are working with steel. Lite brazing can be done with propane, too, if the pieces to be joined are thin.
I've been welding professionally for about 6 years now, and sorry to day the answer is not as easy as you think. You can get a MIG machine for about 600 bucks brand new, and that's good to learn on, and do most projects. It's extremely simple, and the quickest way to make a strong weld. Brazing is easy to do, but really hard to do well. A flux core wire is about 8 bucks at lowes or home depot, and lasts me a week using it an hour a night.
