First of all plan on scrapping out your old siding. The amount of money paid for aluminum will most likely pay for much of the job.
Second of all siding is usually installed to hide something. As you remove the old siding you will probably find all kinds of things. The best advice is to make sure the surface you are attaching the new siding to is strait and flat because every imperfection in the wall will show through the vinyl siding.
Once you have the aluminum off, check to see if your walls are insulated. You may never have a better chance to have insulation blown into the wall cavities. You might even rent a blower and do it yourself. The most important part of new siding is the bottom attachment strip. Take time to be sure it is straight and level. The rest will be easier and look better if you do that part right.
just take the aluminum off and use insualtion for the vinyl siding half inch preferably. go right over the wood clapboard you must be speaking of. And if you are not familiar with siding i suggest you hire someone. you will need a brake to bend aluminumfor fascia ;door and window casings. there like 800 dollars for a desent one and ladders and specific hand tools and the scrap alum will not cover hardly any of the cost as the first guy said ;you will get roughly 300 dollars if normal side house 20 sqares. and if you live in new jersey email me cause i do siding
