We just bought a house and some of the walls are covered with what they said was venetian plaster.?

Question:It is rough and bumpy and looks kinda like stucco. Is there any way to remove it or cover it up without replacing it all with new sheet rock? I really hate it!

Answers:
Both Behr and Glidden paints have a product like this. It would be difficult to remove. Easier to take sheetrock mud (drywall compound) mix it with water to form a thick paint consistency and roll it on with a paint roller. If you mix the mud to a thinner consistency it will level well and give a semi-smooth texture. Mix it thicker and you will get rougher walls. You can mix it thick then use a broad knife and knock down the peaks after about 10 minutes of drying. Put it on thick enough to cover the high-low pattern of the plaster. If the plaster is really rough I would try scraping the high spots with a pull type paint scraper to knock down the those areas. Let it dry and see if you like the results. If you don't simply wet the mud and it can be removed or reworked as much as you want. When you get what you want use a PVA primer to seal the mud and then paint. Try with a small area to experiment before getting into something you don't want to do.

you can try to scrape it off, but it will probably cause as much damage, and more time, than changing out all of the sheet rock (as you already figured)
Sheetrock, while it is heavy to work with, is pretty easy to install, so if you are worried about that, dont worry.
depends what is under it best bet is to go to home depot and ask them
i would think you could hire a professional to skim coat it. i'm not positive, but it's something to look into. i also don't know how this would compare to new sheetrock as far as price.
Venetian plaster is not rough or bumpy, it is quite the opposite. It simulates marble and is as slick as marble.

Since you are not sure what product is applied to the wall, can you find a very inconspicous area to test and see how easily the product can be removed from the wall?
If it is difficult to remove it is probably an italian plaster product (stone or lime), in that case you can have the walls floated smooth again over the existing plaster.
Cheesy venetian plaster is plaster and paint mixed-you should be able to sand it smoother (try out a section) and then prime it and paint it---it is most probably right on drywall.

I can only think of two options: You can sand it smooth if you are careful or you can putty it smooth. Either way it is a lot of work and replacing it may be more cost and time effective.
