How do I stop my toilet from running?
Question:It's driving me MAD.
Answers:
There is a water level adjustment screw at the top of the ballcock. Either adjust that screw so the water level is just below the top of the overflow tube or bend the float rod.
buy a "toilet repair kit" from any home improvement store, and install it, it comes with instructions and easy to do. (about $10-20).
its the ballcock that needs to b checked first..lift up cistern lid and u will see a plastic ball that floats up with water after each flush lift that up slightly and if the flow stops u just need to adjust the plastic screw at base its quite a simple job and quite common.
tie it down!! we don't need a bunch of plumbing fixtures running around town, it could be dangerous for motorists.
check your float in the tank
there is a thin piece of metal connected to a plastic ball... the problem is when u flush the ball goes down and then the water starts to rise it gets stuck under water instead of stayin afloat and stoping the water... on the opposite side of that plastic ball it hooks onto a plastic pipe where it connects there is a screw u need to adjust it to rise the plastic ball... that should take care of ur problems
The flapper (plastic piece at the bottom covering the hole) may not be sealing properly (leaking slowly) so the tank will keep filling because the float (ballcock assembly) doesn't get high enough to shut off the water flow. That or the chain that comes off the lever could be kinked/tangled or rusted keeping the flapper from making contact on the bottom. Make the screw adjustments like the other's recommended, but if it doens't work, replace the flapper. You can buy replacement kits at the hardware store. If you use those cleaners that you put into the tank (tablets and stuff) the chemicals inside slowly eat away at the flapper and other parts. It's best to use the ones that go into the bowl and not the tank.
Oh, and on a side note...I went to pay my water bill one day and they told me that my bill was high for our residence and the amount of ppl living there. They told me to check for a running toilet (which was in my roommate's room and I didn't know about). They told me that if I brought in a receipt showing that it was fixed, they would credit my account. Just something to think about.
call a PLUMBER QUICK..
