Carpentry help needed?
Question:Wife wants me to make a shed :( ;) So then I'm planning on slapping it (8W X 10L X 6H w/slanted roof) on the side of the house.
How do I figure out the length of slanted roof when one side wall is 7' and the other is 6' and the shed is 8' W?
Or if I make the slanted roof 8' with the walls at the same 6' & 7' dimensions, what would the width of the shed be?
Thanks in advance.
Answers:
the difference in height is 1 foot , and the roof has to span 8 feet , or slightly more to provide an overhang and drip edge.
for a triangle 8 ' base and 1' high the other edge is 8.07 feet
which is about 8' 3/4"
(b*b) + (h*h) = (s*s) base squared + height squared = slope side squared
a 1' in 8 is not normal slope if you are in an area that has snow.
I am in favor of laying out some 2 x 4 timber on the ground because you have to allow for timber thicknesses and the angle cuts for the roof rafters.

The height is 1 foot higher on one side...1x1=1
The width is 8 feet........
1plus 64 =65 and the square root of 65 is the lenght of your roof. not counting any overhang. since 8x8 is 64 the square root of 65 is a tad over 8.
Why suffer? Just use 10' length for your rafters. That will allow for at least an 18" overhng. And if you don't want that much overhang, just trim them off to whatever length you want. The actual length of your rafter would be 8'2" to the edge of your outside stud wall. You want it longer than that so you have weather protection from the roof. Good luck!

Why go six foot, you'll just cut and waste two feet off the normal studs, unless you go with 12 footers. Still, I like the 10 footers for the rafters that the guy ahead of me suggested.
