Does anyone know if you can use a cylinder thermostat to control and immersion heater.?

Question:The current immersion heater gets the water too hot. A complete replacement immersion heater would be too big a job and too expensive. I note that some cylinder thermostats are rated at 16 amps so this would seem enough.

Answers:
Remove the cover of your I/H and adjust the temperature setting on the scale to about 55°C or lower to suit. If it has failed and is 'boiling' then disconnect and remove the stat, it just pulls out of it's pocket. Obtain a replacement and reverse the procedure to fit the new one, There are three lengths 7/11/18 inches, use the same as you take out. I would not use a cylinder stat for control.

have you looked on the top of your hot water tank?
there will be a plastic cover (usually round)
Switch off electrics at the mains
take this cover off and you will see where the electrical wire is connected. Close to it you should see the thermostat control, just lower the temperature.
