Does New York state building code require a wall switch for a ceiling fan?
Question:The fan has pull chain switches for the fan and light, but I want to know if NY wants a wall switch as well.
Answers:
We've sold thousands of fans in New York over the last few months in both residential and commercial applications and have never heard of such a requirement, so I cannot imagine that would be the case.
Regardless, it's most likely that you can purchase a universal control that will convert your pull chain fan to a wall controlled fan if you so desire. The resource is linked below.
The National Electric Code requires at least one wall switch controlled lighting outlet in every habitable room and bathroom. Thus you need either a receptacle controlled by a wall switch or a lighting fixture in each room controlled by a wall switch.
If your room with the fan does not have a switch controlled receptacle or lighting fixture, you must have your fan light connected to a wall switch.
If you are using existing wiring, pehaps replacing a ceiling light with the fan, you can purchase a remote control device which will fit into your existing switch box and will control the fan speeds as well as light. Lowes sells them for around $30. A second part of the unit fits in the fan base. It will not work with hugger type fans as they do not have room for this device.
no not as if utilized in a private residence-but otherwise yes .
In addition to what "carman" added, the switching device must be within 6' of any entrance to this room.
