What is the difference (in appearance) between a masonry drill bit and a woodworking drill bit.?
Question:I am putting up a tool rack on a solid block wall. Have a variety of drill bits but don't know whether they are for woodworking or for masonary. Its taking a long time to drill even 1 hole. Any advice would be appreciated - I am using a hammer type power drill.
Answers:
The masonry bit has a harden cutting tip. The tip is bigger than the bit size itself. With a hammer drill and the correct bit you should have it done in no time.

Hope this helps
the masonry bit is slightly rounder and smoother than the wood bit
Masonry drill bit having smooth wall side and woodworking drill bit has ZigZag
Masonry bits usually have a red tip.
You need a special drill bit for a hammer type drill. It usually has a carbide tip. It looks very similar to a masonry bit with two flutes on the end. They are expensive.
Woodworking drill bit - Usually are flat on both sides with a pointed tip
Masonry bit has a spiral pattern on side with two metal flutes on the end.
Hammer drill bit - looks like masonry bit but is specially constructed with carbide tip for hammer drill operation.
Look for a bit with a triangle type head, also the head isn't sharp.
Colour usually, Masonry=Silver/Chrome, With carbide/tungsten tip.
Wood=Black, black/steel/gold, sharpened, no tip
mason bits are odd looking -with a piece of metal running across the top generally and less sharp than regular bits -it wont go thru wood and wood bits will dull out if used on masonry-you will figure it out just dont ask those experts at home depot- or you will never get it down...
A masonry drill bit has a slight point and a wood drill bit has a sharp point. masonry is usually bright silver and wood a duller gray. The shaft cuts are different also.
WOOD has a spiral large shaft rotations
Masonry has a closer spiral shaft closer together than wood.
http://www.bamanufacturing.com/masonry.h... has some pics of each.
firstly the wood drill bits have a sharp point at the tip so you can prod before you drill and the masonary drill bits looks like hammer head shark at the tip, its like a v shape i hope that helps
