What is the easiest way to stain a picket fence?

All valid answers so far, I'll just add a suggestion.

First of all it's a fence not a piece of fine furniture, and you could use a latex based stain.

Spraying would be the easiest in any case, but certainly not in the usually considered sense. I do a lot of work for theater and some of it is in large area painting.

I use a "Hansen Sprayer" It's just a 2.5 gallon tank with a hose in it, a hose attaching to the outside of it, a pump handle on a screw off cap, and an adjustable nozzle at the end of a trigger handle. It's sold many places under many brand names for the prupose of spraying weed killers etc.

For me it works great, isn't so difficult to keep pumped up, sprays effectively, with No overspray to speak up as with a compressor type spray outfit, and allows I don't have to clean any other tool but the sprayer, once I finish a job.

Use a paint roller or spray. A brush may be needed for edges.
if you dont have access to a paint sprayer, you should probably use a wide paint brush. Get one about the sme width of the fence boards. You can also use a smaller brush for the edges /trim. A roller may seem like the easiest way. But you may get stain all over everything else, which could kill the grass, and sicken and pets you may have.
use a solid stain for coverage not a paint-and use a sprayer not a roller and brush
Well, I hope you appreciate this as merely a suggestion.
Once you start painting or staining wood you have started a project that will last a lifetime. Wood takes on a natural patina after a year or so that is appealing to many including me, because for one thing you don't have to paint or stain after two or more years. The wood used for pickets is usually treated against rot or insect damage and will not take certain stains or paints readily anyway, and if you decide to stain you'll have to wait a year or two for the treated wood weather enough to take stain or paint.
Thanks
A pump up garden sprayer does a pretty good job for the money. You may have to brush it in a little though.
The fastest way is to go and purchase a cheap paint sprayer $30 to $80 at Lowes or Home Depot. Stain usually has a mix ratio on the label for sprayers or maybe able to spray directly. Fastest way hands down
