Solution for very rusty bathroom cabinet?

Question:I'm renting so I don't want to pay for a new bathroom cabinet to replace the old rusty one that the owner won't replace. What can I paint over the top of the bad rust (it's rusted really bad in parts) to make it look and feel cleaner and last longer?

Answers:
Get the Kbs Coatings System Sampler for about $16. It's a Stop Rust Be$t Buy. Choose one of 8 colors.

First sand it to remove the flakey rust off of it.
Then follow the three easy steps in the kit...Clean the metal, prep it then Permanently seal it with Rustseal.
Rustseal will cure rock hard & smooth.

Go to hardware store and look in the automotive section of the spray paint. A primer is aval. that sprays right over and bonds rust. First. sand off any loose rust you can, cover all surrounding area with paper taped in place and wear a dust mask and protective gloves before you start. make sure a window is also open if aval. after the rust bonding paint/sealer is dry, 1to2 hrs, spray another colour of your choice; if its a rental go semi-gloss white or close. always inform landlord before you start any repair. good luck
What you'll need to do is sand down the old surface. The tricky part is trying not to sand through the badly rusted areas. (You said badly rusted but that is pretty subjective) If the metal is fairly sturdy it will just be a case of priming and painting with Rustoleum. However if the metal is rusted through. I would go to an auto parts store like NAPA or Pep Boys and buy a small pkg of bondo or auto body repair kit and you'll be able to patch the offensive area. let it dry per instructions sand smooth and paint as above. Then take copies of all of the receipts and give them to old cheapo with next months rent check less your expenses.
sand, prime and paint it. or buy new one and take it off rent. or just buy new one and call it even if it bothers you a lot.
You might want to look into whether this is a health code violation. If it is, you could approach the landlord with it, or buy an inexpensive new cabinet, deduct it from the rent, and with your receipt include a letter quoting which violation it is.

Good luck!
