I have a dryer that has a cord with 3 prongs but my outlet is a 4 prong outlet. I need an apapter.?
Question:I have a dryer that has a cord with 3 prongs but my outlet is a 4 prong outlet. I need an apapter so I can place the the 3 prong dryer cord into it and then on the other side, it will fit into the 4 prong socket. Where can I buy this? Home Depot does NOT sell it.
Answers:
You dont want to get an adapter you want to change the plug it is not that hard to do , Get a 4 prong cord, take out the old cord , and you will see 3 screws and a green ground screw,
the the 4 prong cord will have 4 wires , 2 hots ( black and red) , neutral ( white) and a ground (green) , the green goes to the green ground screw the neutral goes to the middle screw marked N and the red and black go to the outside screws marked L1 and L2 , and there will be a jumper from the N to the ground screw you must remove this ( this is for a 3 prong plug.
Is this dryer on a 220 line?
If so, you need an outlet to fit that plug. Forget the adaptor.
And make sure you shut that breaker off when doing the change out.

Don't, don't. don't. The four prong outlet is 220 volts and is designed for electric dryers. If yours is a gas dryer, it must be connected to a three prong outlet and a gas outlet.
The reason home depot doesnt have it is because they dont make any such thing.Youre trying to plug a 220 volt appliance into 2 110 volt outlets. You must get someone to install a 3 prong 220 volt outlet.Anyone who know anything about electricity can install it for you.A 3 pronged female plug to match your 3 prog male plug on the dryer are about 14 bucks. If an electric dryer its 220 volts.
You would need to go to Home Depo or some where and buy another cord to fit the 4 prong outlet...
You'll have to change the cord on your dryer. Home depot sells this and the guy you asked for the adapter should have told you this. Its very simple you will need to connect the 4th wire which is green to the chasis of the dryer there should already be a green screw back there. Good luck
