What would be best proceedure to spraypaint these metal car ramps?
Question:Hi,
I bought a set of car service/maintenance ramps (2nd hand but close to what they cost new - there is a long waiting time to buy new).
They are presumably steel, but are definately quite heavy.

[Its time like this I wish I was in USA where you can buy better aluminium ramps at 100% cheaper]
However they aren't painted.. and they have accumulated a few patches of light rust here and there - and I'd like to paint them and protect from more rust developing.
At new you can have the option of powdercoat finish and I think it looks great.. http://www.restorationramps.co.uk/phdi/p... but I can't now get mine powdercoated anywhere locally.
I want the leadup ramps to be red, and yellow on the front units... and sort of hardened paint so not easy to develop rust... is there a best way I should go about the job?
Do I need to prepare them somehow first ect?
Thx.
Answers:
As previously said -prepare first, primer and then you can't go wrong with some hammerite!
Taking time and care with prep will ensure the best finish so don't scrimp on that!
Use a wire brush or sandpaper to remove any loose rust. Wash off any oil or grease with strong detergent or trisodium phosphate. Prime the ramps with flat red spray primer, then top coat with spray enamel in the color you prefer. The most durable spray can primer and paint is "Rustoleum" brand, but I don't know if it is sold in the UK. Surely a place as wet as britian has good paint for rejuvinating steel objects.
yes two good answers above, personally i would apply a paint called red-oxide as a undercoat as this deters rust, then your top coat?
i understand that RustSeal made by KBS Coatings is the first moistured cured rust preventive paint to be sold in the colors of oxide red, green & off white. This tough rust protective paint is applied directly to the bare metal where it is able to seep into & interlock with it to form a permanent non porous barrrier. actually cures by drawing moisture out of the metal & air.
Before sealing the metal, KBS recommends cleaning & prepping.or just sandblast the ramps & you are ready to apply the RustSeal.
Go with RustSeal ... KBS Coatings. It works awesome!
