Loud neighbors? making it quiet...?
Question:I live in a four apartment complex and the walls are really thin. The neighbors blare their radio all day and shut it off right before quiet hour in my city. I've talked with the landlord and he's talked with them, I've talked with them. From outside it is barely audible but inside it is constantly thump thump thump thump. I cant stand it... anybody got any ideas how to mute the noise, cheaply, on my end (im a college student), or anything, legal?

home depot carries soundboard it's about 1/2" thick and it creates a soundbarrier, it's used in classrooms, it's not very expensive, comes in 4x8 sheets put it on the wall that is between you and them, try it and see if the landlord will pay 1/2
Bass is very, very difficult to stop. I could give you a long list of noise isolation techniques but none are all that effective on bass and none are that inexpensive. The problem is that the walls themselves become the speaker. The walls are so big, they only need to move very slightly to create a noticable sound.
Short of breaking their radio, you may want to get some noise-canceling head phones. You can get a decent set for $50. The best head phone's I've tried is from Bose and go for about $300. They are expensive but work incredibly well. On an airplane, these babies make the flight completely silent!
Anyway, good luck.
ditto the Bose.I love mine!
im sorry to tell you ,but the only way to sound proof your apartment , would be to build a wall in front of the wall . you have to have space between them , an inch is good , then stuff the wall with those white puffy peanut shaped box fillers . the whole thing is , having the sound broken up before it gets to your side . it dies out while traveling through foam peanuts . 1 5/8 metal studs and 5/8 sheet rock , foam peanuts . also ask the asshole to raise the sub woofer off the floor and speakers off the walls if any . also there is a thing called renters rights . laws applied to your rights may help you fight your problem alot easier in court .
I have a similar problem. The neighbors on one side of me have 6 kids and there are 5 on the other. I hung quilts on the shared wall in my bedroom which muffles the noise, and run a small air filter at night. The white noise from the filter completely covers outside city noise as well.
Even though they turn it down before the city orrdinance takes effect. If the landlord will not do anything to get them to turn the music down. go to the local police department and file a complaint or call them and have them come out. You are not going to be able to sound proof your apartment cheaply. you could always go to the basement and turn the power off to their apartment take out the fuze or flip the breaker. If they arent very smart they wont even think to check the breaker they will just call the landlord. or power company. Dont the rest of the neighbors complain about it? No matter what you do its going to have to be the landlord that takes care of the problem by having them move out or by you moving out.
I had a similar problem with a neighbor who lived above me. They were super quiet during the day and then when 10 PM hit, it seemed like they were having a rave party in their apartment. I complained to the landlord, called the police, and finally checked out my rights as a renter and read the fine print in my lease. My lease allowed me to move without notice and without being at fault if the landlord was negligent in proving a safe, quiet environment. The lease also stated that if a tenant complained about another tenant's noise level a certain number of times and the tenant was found at fault, they would be evicted. The noisy tenant was finally evicted. Check out this website to find out the Renter's rights in your state. http://www.badlandlords.info/ Hope this helps :)
ceiling tiles are good and the grid and tiles are not expensive - you don't have to mount on a ceiling a wall also will do. It uses up 5" of space - between the tiles and the wall / ceiling so put in some insulation batting. Corning also sells a cheap / easy to install basement wall kit
Then you could fight fire with fire - get a stereo system have sub woofer face the wall - they will love you- Make sure you get a recording of a good base beat
put an M-80 in thier radio and rigg it so when they turn it on, it explodes, no more problem! thats what i did and i didnt get arrested, lol
