How do remove hard water from an electric kettle?
Question:I have an electric kettle that is black on the bottom on the inside and I think it's hard water. How do I remove the hard water safely so that I can continue to use my kettle?
Answers:
Boil Vinegar in it, then boil water to rinse it out, if that doesn't work, put some vinegar in the bottom & add baking soda (it will bubble due to chemical reaction but it is totally safe)
Try using CLR following there instructions. And once it is clean throw some marbles in the bottom of the kettle, they help to stop anymore buildup.
i could be wrong but i thought hard water deposits were brown, not trying to be funny.
I wouldn't use CLR if it's not safe for humans! Just use some coffee pot descaler. I think it's easy to find ... or it might be called coffee pot cleaner. Anyway, it's a cleaner made for exactly your problem. I think that the active ingredient is fumeric acid.
Fill it with some ice and a lot of salt, then swirl it around. I use this method for my coffee pot and it works, plus it's not toxic.
Let it thaw! (Sorry, bad joke.)
Try a couple of denture cleaning tablets; leave it for 6 hours or so then scrub, rinse and do it again. The Bicarb/ vinegar is also worth a go, but not as good for serious buildups
