What clearcoat will adhere to shellac?
Question:I've just put about 8 coats of shellac on a handmade table. I know that shellac protects well enough, but I'd like to put a few coats of clear on it to add some depth and shine.
However, on the can of shellac I used, it says I can't use polyurethane on top of it. I also know that nitrocellulose is too soft for my purposes.
Are there any other lacquers or varnishes that I can use?
Answers:
Shellac is all you need as far as protection-rub some fine steel wool over it for depth-0000 steel wool wont scratch 8 coats of shellac-only give it a buffed look
I find tung oil a great way to finish wood-it shines and protects and looks great-but I wouldn't use it over shellac-just a thought for next time..
