Where do air registers go and where do return registers go in a room when installing a heating and air system?

Question:

Answers:
You need to check your local codes for this answer. It will vary from state to state, city to city. If someone here tells you to put it in one place and you do it, when the inspector comes out, he or she will make you change it. Call your local inspection office or inspection authority. They will have the answers you need.

Generally, hot air ducts should be on an outside
wall. Cold air returns on an inside wall.
Try to put the hot air ducts away from potential
sofa/chair locations. Return ducts also need a
clear passage. But they may be accessed through
a "tunnel" from a clear spot to the wall.
Good luck on your DIY project.
Heat supplies should be installed lower and close to the floor. Remember 'heat' rises. Return air supplies should be installed higher and close the the ceiling.
I install central heat and air for a living, for over 30 years now in middle Tennessee, and here, codes mainly looks at electrical and gas piping issues, they're more concerned about fire than ductwork.
On a single level home, all supply vents go on the outside walls, either near or under windows or near doors, to create an "air blanket" effect between the hot/cold walls and the living area. We just finished a 3 1/2 ton split system last week, and at 93 outside, the people inside are cool campers.
We put 1 vent in small rooms (10x10) and 2 in larger rooms.
The return(s) air filter grille(s) are in the low hallway wall of a closet, close to the middle of the house, with the thermostat above that at about 5 ft., 1 return per 2000 sq ft., has worked fine for me and my dad's old company (50 years running)
