How do I strip and stain wood veneer?

Question:I have an old desk that was made in the 1950s that I just got at a garage sale. the desk has a wood veneer and it is pretty moldy/discolored looking. Any tips on how I can successfully restain the top of the desk?

Answers:
You can try a lite sanding and then restraining, but it depends on the type of veneer you are working with. Sometimes a lite sanding and then some old English oil with stain will cover and make due sort of shabby chic. Can you do something other than restraining it, can you paint it, put a piece of floor vinyl on it, or cover it with cheap piece of Marble. Or paint the under side of a piece of glass to go over the top of the stained wood. Think outside the box and have fun. also check out this website for more suggestions.http://www.diynetwork.com/diy/woodworkin...
