Is it difficult to get your house wired networked?
Question:I was thinking about just installing two jacks upstairs that would only respond between those two rooms but then I thought why don't I make it a project to do all the rooms so the entire house will be wired networked. How hard is this? I ran into the CAT6 keystones and saw the back and from what I gather you have the split the wire in accordance to the readings on the back of the stone. But really though is it hard to make these wall ports?
Answers:
Cat 6 is difficult to work with and right now and maybe in the future, it may not be the way to go as equipment may be a problem. Cat 5e is fast, cheap and fairly easy to work with, that's the way I went in a custom home I am just finishing, and I did considerable research. Go to Home Depot, they have Structured Media Centers, and the modules that snap in them made by Leviton. I use this and add a 110 punch down block next to it. Then comes the hard part, getting the wire in the walls, especially insulated exterior walls. Get the Black and Decker Complete Guide to Home Wiring and a book on how to network and cable a home.
Yes cat6 is not easy to deal with, cat 5 is easier to work with but still can be tricky you are better off going wireless and putting in several routers in the house
I agree. Wireless is the answer. No wiring hassle and 1/50th of the cost. A wired system is great for new construction and maybe a room or 2 but a whole house rewire is gonna run you some serious bucks. Stick with wireless. One good wireless point should be perfect to cover the entire house.
