There are several good adhesive removers available at any hardware store. Also, depending on the surface that the adhesive is on, you could try lighter fluid, rubbing alcohol, WD-40, mineral spirits, nail polish remover, etc.
cigarette lighter fluid works same as rubbing alcohol except alcohol evaporates much quicker. Lighter fluid will remove sticker glue safely from even plastic.
The most effective means by which you can ruin the adhesive quality of any typical hydro-carbon adhesive is to add more hydro-carbons. Any kind of oil that you apply to the surface of the adhesive will cause it to adhere to the oil, like it is supposed to.

After several applications there is no more adhesive left to adhere to the oil and then you can remove the oil smudge with any solvent.
