I just installed a ceiling fan and lights won't work?

Question:I have this extra red wire coming from the ceiling outlet. This is a new home. The instruction manual for the ceiling fan did not talk about a red wire. this is what I did...
Ceiling Groundwire to Fan Green wire
Ceiling White wire to Fan White wire
Ceiling Black wire to Fan Black wire AND Blue wire. The fan works but the lights don't.
What is this red wire for too? AM I supposed to attach the blue wire to the red one?

Answers:
Since it is a new home the red wire is probably for a different switch. Many times in new homes the pull chain is not required for the light; the light has it's own switch on the wall. Do you have two switches located close to one another; IE side by side. It sounds like you have the fan wired correctly for one switch, and it should work irregardless. I know this is common sense, but have you tried the pull chain? If you don't have a separate wall switch for the light, you might need a new switch for the light with in the housing.

The red wire is likely from a second switch to control the lights separately from the fan and should be connected to the blue wire.

There should be a white wire for the light kit as well. This should be tied in with the other white wires (the one from the fan and the one from the box). This is probably why the lights are not working.
there is probably a switch that goes to the fixture that will allow you to use the fan without the light
You have a separate wire for the lights, I would guess it's the red wire. Try it.
be alert is right, sounds like you did not attach the white wire (neutral) on your lights.
