Remove the handles and trim from around the shower handel or handels should be able to do this with just Phillips screw driver don't forget to turn the water off first. Then start by cutting back the drywall 2" around the edges to revile the nail flange it may be screwed two a 2 x 4 or nailed to a 2 x 4. Then look at the drain and see how it is fastened to the pipes some times there will be an access area where you can disconnect the drain line from below. If not take a hammer and chisel and break the tub around where the drain is. Then remove the nails or screw that are holding it to the walls. It may be necessary to cut the tub/ shower unit into piece's for easy removal. Please do not forget to wear leather work gloves there is nothing worse than getting a splinter from the fiberglass that this unit may be made of. It is also possible that there is concrete under the tub. If this is the case don't worry it is for support only and will not hurt to remove. If you do get the drain apart make sure to put a rag or sock in the end so that sewer gas does not leak into your house. GOOD LUCK. There really is no right or wrong way to remove the tub/shower unit other than making sure the water is off and the drain is disconnected.
DO NOT FORGET THE GLOVES.
There is a continuous flange around the perimeter of the tub/shower combo. Nails or screws secure the unit to the wall studs. To remove one typically requires cutting it into smaller sections with a reciprocating saw.
If i wasn't trying to save the thing, i'd hammer a crowbar or a prybar in behind it (anywhere that you can) and start prying. Chances are, that once you get a start somewhere, the whole unit will come loose. From there, if it won't go through the door easily, cut it up with a reciprocating saw.
Wear safety glasses through the whole job please.
No there is alot of plumbing involved. Don't touch it if you are not familiar with your plumbing if you live in and apartment or condo please don't touch it. If you live in a single family home and you own it just go to the main water pipe adn cut off the water to the entire house then you can remove it However you also need a place to bathe so who is going to install the new tub or shower. This is very dangerous you can flood your place and others if you live in an apartment or condo, set it on fire, ruin your electrical, burst your pipes is the pressure gets backed up somewhere in the pipes, ruing your drywall or plaster, brickwork, ductwork, etc. water is very powerful nothing to play with and you don't seem to know what you are doing. The caulking is the last part of the job. Watch some of those home improvement shows on HGTV and you will see some of the hidden dangers to makeovers.
reveal the flange by cutting 2 " around the permitter of the unit
peel away this drywall to undo the screws on the flange
