Is there a way to make my whole chain-link fence electrified w/ low voltage?
Question:I have a dog who likes to break out...my idea was some kinda of batteries and jumper cables...Yall have any better ideas?
Answers:
You really can't electrify your chainlink fence. You can get an electric fence charger, a few posts, electric fence wire or fencing tape and some fence insulators. If you live in town check to be sure you can legally do this. Run one strand of wire just below the top edge of your fence and another just a few inches off the ground. This should stop your dog from digging under or jumping over. Make sure you get a fence charger that was meant to be used for dogs though. Chargers meant for cattle can set a grown man on his behind. Some pet stores, farm and home type stores and I think Lowes home improvement stores carry the ones for dogs. Also make sure you mark your fence with electric fence warning signs and marking tape. There are also invisible fences now that do not pose as much risk to the public. I would assume these are better for use in town where neighborhood children could bumble into your fence and help alleviate liability issues. The wires are buried in the ground and the dog wears a reciever on his collar. The underground wires carry a signal that is transmitted to the reciever when the line is crossed and delivers a zap to the dog. I have never used one but have had a neighbor that sucessfully trained their puppy with one to keep him off of a busy highway. This might be the way to go in town. I'm very rural now and there are major differences in what you can do to contain your animals. One other option is a training collar. You control when to apply the 'Zap' ie...when dog is jumping the fence or digging under it. The drawback to this is... If your dog is outdoors while you are gone it will have zero effect unlike the invisible or electric fence.
without the fence being isolated from the ground no. and do you realize the amount of liabilty and possible jail time you could face if someone touched your fence and got shocked..
you would be better off with a shock collar
you can run a bare wire around your fence a few inches from the fence on small posts with insulators than get a fence charger local home center should be fine
A possitive charge to the fence w/ negative to ground. 9 volt is typically used. and don't touch it with bare feet and for godsake do pee on it with bear feet. Dogs don't wear shoes so they will be grounded and such products may be available at a pet store, follow directions, even low voltage can pack a punch. Ask around and get info before you decide to do this.
electrifying the entire fence is a pain.It would be far easier and cheaper to just buy some insulators which will attach to the posts and run a 18 gauge electric fence wire 8 inches off the ground and at the top.Tractor supply sells all of this reasonably priced as well as the 12 volt pulser.
NO!
Shocking your dog is not a good solution. If you love your dog, you should invest in securing the fence better.
