How can i stop the plaster falling off the wall when i put a picture hook in?
Question:I'm trying to put pictures up, but the little tack nails are making the plaster fall out.
My landlord's going to go nuts lol
Answers:
fill the old holes with soap... (old solders moving out of digs trick)
dont use nails... double sided carpet tape works great.. as does velcro tabs
move house
use screws if its soft plaster.my new build home is the same and if i use screws its not so bad
If you use a small drill and Rawlplug your plaster will stay intact.
just get a drill off of someone and use the drill bit that is the same size or slightly smaller then the nail.
if the plaster has fallen out and looks bad, get some filler form BnQ or home base and fill it in. nock on the wall you are making a hole in first, and check if it's brick or plaster board, if it's plaster board, dont put a big and heavy picture up!!
you can get plaster board fixings in a hardware that you screw in to a wall then you put a screw in to that one and it's very messy but does the job they are easy to cover up.
Saint, You need to predrill with a mason bit and tap in a metal drywall anchor, attach screw and hang your Elvis picture, good luck
Use a stud finder to find a wooden upright, then drive the nail into wood. If you put it in pure plaster then try to hang a heavy photo, it will fall out.
you can sticky back picture hooks from b&q or other good hardware stores (and they are good actually)
Buy a drill bit the same size as the picture hook nails and pre-drill the hole in the wall first. Drill down at the angle the nail sets in the hook. That should stop the problem. With lath and plaster walls, the chipping is mostly caused by the wood lath bouncing back behind the plaster as you try to nail into it. The only time this may not occur is if you happen to hit a stud.
try drilling it smaller then the hook some plaster will still come off but it won't chip really bad
well if you insist on using nails into plaster as opposed to dry wall, put a piece of white adesive tape down first this will hold the plaster in place but remeber when you remove the tape the paster will come with it, you would probably be best to use the wet adhesibve hooks just wet the wall place hook and adhesive on wall wipe with damp cloth and let dry. to remove do those steps in reverse.
The drill bits do exist, but you'll probably end up snapping it in the wall anyway (don't take much to break). Just do your thing - you live there, right? The small holes and chips are quickly fixed with a finger & a tube of Polyfill (spackling) paste. Too easy, takes no time, no mess.
To avoid splitting a plaster wall when driving a nail into it, try heating up the nail first. The hot nail will go through the plaster easier and without any cracks!
Or:
Before driving a nail into plaster, make an “X” of scotch tape and your nail has a better chance of not splitting the plaster.
you can get small white picture hooks with three very small and short nails that you can hammer in and these take amazing grip.
i have plaster, you have to drill a small pilot hole first. ps... use spackling to fix holes, read" how to" on back of package, easy to do, or find a different method of hanging pictures at any hardware store
I would go over the area with a very thin coat of plaster, then use the mesh tape - this will hold it all in tact. Then another thin coat of plaster. Once it all dries you should be able to drill a hole and hang it without plaster falling out.
Use adhesive tape or insulating tape ( u wont c it behind the picture) simply place the tape over the spot u want to knock in the nail and voila!
If the walls are plasterboard you need to use the correct types of hooks. They are easy to tell apart from normal hooks in that they are normally made from plastic and have three small nails in one end. The nails only go about 7mm into the plasterboard but because there are three of them they support the weight of the picture.
