Is there an easy way to convert an old toilet drain into a floor drain?
Question:There are two working commodes in one of our building's bathrooms. We are interested in converting the second into a European-style shower with just a regular floor drain. I understand the plumbing above the ground, but I'm not sure how to make the floor drain withouth jackhammering the foundation and putting in a P-pipe. Is there another option?
Answers:
not really sorry
I would say:
1. Open the floor up from the drain and little to one side.
2. You will need to install a 'U' shaped trap to prevent sewage fumes from returning to the home.
3. The acutal floor drain will be somewhat to the one side of the original pipe.
4. After the 'U' trap you'll want to install a reducer to the size of drain you desire.
5. Remember, since you need a trap and a reducer you will probably be going to the one side of the original drain, and somewhat downward too, so the drain ends up about even with the current floor.
It may be much easier to have a plumber do this much - this will probably be the hardest part. To save some money you could finish it from here - and cover the floor too.
