What does the owner's manual explain and guide you to do. You know, read the instructions first (it's not a guy thing - I hear that all the time.). If you don't have the owner's manual then contact B & D Service Dept to acquire one.

I don't fool with the restringing any more. . . . bought a trimmer that uses drop-in spools. Much nicer to restring.

First--be certain you are replacing the new line in the right direction--sounds stupid- but it happens Invite your neighbor over to have a look maybe.
unscrew spool and restring with same size in same direction. Replace spool.
Don't know that model, but if it's a two-cutting-string model, you need to make sure the lines remain parallel, and never cross. Also, look at the cap on the spool, and make sure you are winding it the correct direction. If all else fails, try putting less line on.
