I would hire 8 strong collage boys. and then buy them pizza. and beer

A ditch witch is the way to go for long narrow trenches like for wires or pipes. They can be rented and you can rent an operator too usually. Call local excavation companies to get a machine and operator or rent the machine at your local rent-all.

Here is more info on Ditch Witch:

Alternatively you can get a back-hoe to do the work. This is a better choice for wider and deeper digging.

Third choice is to bite the bullet and just dig it up with a pick-axe and shovel. This takes longer but the exercise might be good for you and you have the satisfaction of having done it yourself.

Good luck!
A Ditch Witch is a brand of trencher. There are several different brands and sizes. Depending on the length of the trench and the width you will either go with a ride on trencher which you ride on and can do a trench from 6" - 12". A walk behind it typicall 4". They are not hard to use at all and your local rental company can inform you of the proper usage and correct procedures to using this type of equipment. Make sure you ask for rock bits on the machine as that will help get through the rocks and stop any breakage of the teeth on the machine.

Find a local Sunbelt Rentals location, they are experts!!
Depends on the depth and width of the trench.
A ditch-wich is like a large walk behind trencher that operates like an oversize with 6"mini buckets for teeth on a big 3 ft wheel and others like a large chain saw with the the same buckets for teeth. If the width of the trench is 12" or more there are small power shovels that are walk behind in size or tractor size for heavy duty digging.
Most of these can be rented by the hour, day or week.
Good luck ! ! !
soak it with water and do as much as you can in a day you would be surprised on how much one can do in a day.
use pick and shovel and take your time
its easier to use a ditch witch but they cost $ at your rental supply store it like a chain saw on wheels but digs into earth
You might want to rent a bobcat with two attachments for what you are doing...
The first one would be the back hoe attachment...,
The second would be a jack hammer attachment for breaking up the rocky area, because the back hoe or a trencher will not go through rock....
If you can find somebody to hire that will be the way to go..Fastest and Cheapest way to go..That is with the bobcat and attachments..
Bobcats come with all types of attachments but those are the two you are going to need...

Good Luck...
A ditch witch works well when used for hard pan soil and some light rock, if you have solid rock, a rock saw with a big wheel and teeth on it is the best way to go depending on the size of trench 24"deep X12" wide is what they will cut. around $500-$1000 a day of course you can get bigger ones for more $$$. These are made for this and work well. The other way would be a mini excavator (small back hoe) with a ram hoe (big jack hammer) attached. The ditch witch and rock saw you walk behind and the excavator you ride on. If you use a ditch witch you will probably break of some teeth on rock and the rental place will charge you. Not to mention it will be like holding on to a bucking bull when it hits rock.
