Carpet quality and Padding for carpet?

Question:I am replacing the current carpet in the bed rooms. The new carpet thtat I am getting is stainmaster@ Kamaro, pulsh carpet, 46 oz face weight, 4.5 twist, solid color. The cost is $16.2 per sq ft and $1.8 per sq yard. This is Home Depot's special price. Is this a good price?

For padding, Home Depot has two types of foam padding, one is $5.16 per sq ft, thickness is 1/2". The other one is $3.96 sq ft, the thickness is 7/16. What is your advice on which kind of padding to buy?

Answers:
don't just go by the size of the padding....more importtantly ask about the "poundage"8lb.padding is the most popular and it makes the carpet feel more firm...anything less makes the carpet feel more spongy and the padding will wear faster....
sounds like the carpet is pretty well priced but the installation is where you will have to pay..
I have nothing against h/d or lowes but I would go to a local carpet installtion company for both....might be a little more money but they always seem to do the better job from what I understand...

You need to get quotes from real carpet stores. In general Home depot and lowes are the highest priced place to get anything installed. Cabinets doors or flooring. They always add to the in store price for something. As for the pad, the best is Stainmaster pad. With your Stainmaster carpet you will get an additional 3 years stain warranty with Stainmaster pad.
We've found Home Depot to be fair priced but you should always get other quotes for comparisons. Whatever you decide on the carpet, the pad is even more important. Buy the highest quality and thickness you can afford. It will make all the difference in the feel and wear of your carpet. Even carpet layers will tell you this.
Buy the best your budget can afford quality always pays in the long run and pad helps the life of the carpet
