Do I have to use a special paint to protect a cast iron waste stack from getting barnacles?

Question:I have barnacles on the stack now and I wanted to scrape them off and repaint the stack to protect it.

Answers:
I will hope this is a legitimate Q, even if an inane one.

First of all "Barnacles" exist UNDER Salt Water.

Second: Have you ever assumed that painting under water was similar to walking on water?

Third: ??????

I dont really get this.but if you want to paint a bottom of a boat there is special paint for that.
