What is the best burning wood for a fire?

Question:Can it be found in the midwest?

Answers:
I would think oak, but here is a site with some more information.. http://www.mastersweep.com/wood.htm... ...Good Luck...

Oak burns very hot.
If you are referring to a fireplace, I believe Oak is best. It burns for a long time and emits less to clog the flu. It must be aged because it is a very hardwood, and you will need a starter wood to get it going. The less sap in a wood, the cleaner it burns. Less popping and sparking. If you are looking for an outdoor fire a softer wood will burn faster and smoke more.
A mix of hardwood and softwood.
Hardwood(oak and maple) if seasoned will burn quite well
oak, hickory, maple and hard birch - there are others that are just as good, such as Iron wood (Hophornbeam), dogwood, beech, etc. Don't burn Poplar or cedar, they pop too much and send sparks all over the place.
