I want to render a breezeblock wall 3ft high to give a continental effect. What products and how?
Question:The wall is 3ft high/20ft long, and just built, so is clean. It is built of breezeblocks.
Not sure how to go about rendering a wall or what mix/materials to use.
Basically I've not got a clue!
I want to give the garden a continental feel and will paint the wall a cream/white colour.

hi,
use course clean sand and mix it with cement, a strong mix is best for outside prob about 3:1 or 5:2 with little mortar mix, about 100ml per mix.
coat on the mortar using a hawk and trowel, and straighten it with a straight piece of skirting< 75mm x 12mm x 1800mm> mortar is coated on about 12-20mm thick.
dont go too far ahead of yourself about 1800 at one time. when you ve straightened it you will notice shiney bits on the wall, these are holes and need filled out. coat on over the holes and straighten, repeat this untill wall is level. once it is level, to achieve a continental look, you must rub the wall with a sponge, like cleaning the car or windows motion.
now, move along the wall and repeat process.
you will nead to nail a piece of skirting onto the top of the wall to the required depth if there is no coping.
good luck
Buy ready bagged sharp (washed) sand and cement use a metal float to apply, rough this up with a wooden float, the rougher the better if you want a "continental" finish......An alternative would be to render as before and while the rendering is wet dash on coloured chippings of your choice so no further maintenance is needed.
it is not a good idea to render down to the path level, as all the moisture will suck up the wall, you can get stop beads which you nail on and you render down to these . use a 4;1 mix of mortar, unibond wall first, apply a scratch coat,[a thin even coat of mortar and scratched with a special tool] apply a good top coat and take off access mortar with a straight edge, then rub up with a plastic float good luck.
get a tub of plasterers mortar from a building centre or ready mix suppliers, thats about 7 wheelbarrow loads. ask if they can make it 24 or 36 hour setting so it gives you more time to work with it before it sets. float it on then when its fully set after a few days paint it white with exterior grade masonry paint. 3 coats should do it. if you get 36 hour and you dont want to do it in one go make sure you cover the tub with bin liners or a tarp to keep the rain of it.
its not a diy job and u will find that out lol call in a plasterer ull b glad u did...i know ull try for that continental look but ull prolly end up the rock climbing look as most ppl hav ive had to re render for lol u hav been warned!!
I'M AFTER THE SAME SORT OF THING - JUST HAD A LARGE DECK AND LIGHTS BUILT AND WANT TO HAVE A LOW LEVEL CONTEMPORARY RENDERED WALL COMING OFF THE DECK AND PAINTED A CREAMY WHITE - MY DAD IS AN ARCHITECT AND HE KEEPS SAYING HE DOESNT ADVISE ME TO DO IT ARGGGHGHHGHGHG AS IT WILL CRACK EVENTUALLY BLAHBLAH BLAH IM NOT LISTENING.. (only because he thinks he will be doing the work!!) ..so thanks for your question, hehe however i have heard my dad mutter to my other half about appling a coat of latex bonded render, a waterproof primer and a sprayed top coat of paint.... if you want contemporary style then make the render smooth, but id advise using a plasterer to do this - they may charge you by the day which could be anythign from £100 -150 approx. let us know how it goes (before i do mine)
