Can you damage a ceiling fan by connecting the wires incorrectly?

Question:I did this, and smoke and a spark appeared. When I correct it properly, will the fan work?

Answers:
yes

Maybe. Try it.
No, perfection is inaccurate. Do it the wrong way.
it might....but u might have shorted some of the wires...
It should.
You should get a "OHM METER" and test it to see if it has "shorted to ground". You stand a chance of doing some serious damage to 1. the fan 2. yourself 3. the house. I'd call an electrician if I were you. No offense but it doesn't sound like you know what your doing.
It will probably work. I'm not sure what you did or if the fan has lights attached. Did it kick the breaker? Anyway, reconnect the fan...white to white, black to black, bare wire to the green screw.or follow the directions that came with the fan.
can you damage the fan NO will it reverse the fan NO BUT! if you connect the fan white wire to the incoming power black and the fan black to the incoming power white you will create what is call a Hot Neutral and that can cause problems by putting about 75 volts ac back feed to ground. confussed yet.lol connect your fan wiring ,With Power OFF, white to white (neutral) and black to black (power or the hot lead) remember black will bite you. with that said it depends on Who did the inital wireing. you may find a conductor coming into the fan with a red, blue , and black. if so treat the red and black as hot you may need to check the wall mounted fan switch or the breaker panel and Do Not go sticking your fingers in the breaker panel it can KILL you.. back to the fan.... the light kit will use red, black, and blue sooooo check your insturctions and be careful..email me if you need to...Jim
This happened to my brother when I was younger mind you it happened twice the first time it really blew the fan up before the breaker tripped and the motor was really broken and it had to be junked and the second time it was fine after it was rewired... so its hard to say especially if it has a light on the fan which I would imagine there was and thats why you had an issue... either way I would rewire it properly remember to take a good look at the wiring instructions and if your box has funny wiring you may want to look up online whats going on in there... either way i think you will be fine
There is not enough information to troubleshoot your problem completely, but try this.

Most fans only have two wires to connect, one for the power (black) and one for the neutral (white). Not that you should, but assuming you reversed the two wires, the fan would still run, it would just not be as safe for anybody touching it while it is "on".

The fan should not smoke unless it already had damage. New equipment can be defective right out of the box - either from the manufacturing process, or in shipping and handling. If it is, there is nothing you can do but replace/return it.

Sparks usually only occur when you have a direct short. It is difficult to create a direct short in a 120-volt AC fixture by wiring it incorrectly, unless there is a defect, or unless you connected two power source wires together. A short occurs when one wire, or power source, touches another wire, or power source different from the first. If that happens, the damage is usually isolated to the point of contact and you can see the damage (melted places in the wire, metal, plastic, etc., black soot stains). If that spark was inside the fan where you cannot see the damage caused, you probably did not cause it. If it is where you can see it, prevent the two points from touching again, clean off any black carbon stains from the spark/smoke with a solvent (it is conductive), insulate any exposed parts or bare wire with electrical tape (or silicone if the part is not a wire), wire it correctly, stand back, and try it again.

In the industry, we call it the "spark test", and that is why we get the big bucks. Good luck, 'cause if you do try it, and it happens to you again, you will become some electrician's best customer.
