How do I fix a rotting floor next to the bathtub?
Question:The floor feels really spongy about ten inches at one end of the tub.
Answers:
first cover surrounding surfaces. You must tear out the damaged floor; down to subfloor if nessasary. Now that its open look for the source of leak. fix that, replace floor and you are done. ( yes, its a lot of work, but the only way to do it) good luck
clean floor
first and above all fix the leak..you may have to even remove the tub and replace the floor its a bit more than a weekend project
1. Remove the flooring (that right you get to replace the flooring)
2. Find the floor joist, look for nails or use a nail to locate them.
3. Mark a line along the center of the first joist where the sub flooring is still solid.
4. Mark two lines to perpendicular to the joist where the flooring is solid.
5. Use a saws-all to cut out the damaged area.
If you are lucky there will be a joist close the edge of the tub, If not you will have to install blocking to span the joist to provide an adequate place to nail down the sub floor.
Doing all this is pointless unless you fix the source of the problem.
Good Luck
you must cut out the rot it spreads like a cancer to the nearest joist then install new sub floor
