Any suggestions for a successful garage sale? We are planning for this Saturday(weather-permitti...

Question:we already placed ad in the daily newspaper here($20);wife says I should not have put phone number. Oh well

Answers:
Advertize the hole week before and if your really in to it make out some fliers and put them on car windows at the local stores.

1. be brutal in your pricing. garage sale shoppers want bargains. forget about what you paid for it. you might check thrift store prices and then beat them.
2. wheel and deal, barter. if someone doesn't like a price, ask for a counter and take any reasonable counter. also, throw another item in if they think the price is high.
3. make it fun
Wife's probably right about the phone number...lol.

Signs are the most important. You need signs that people can see, that are not confusing - right up til you get to your house. You know where you live, but I don't, and I need big signs with CLEAR arrows to guide my way. Put the NUMBER of your house on EVERY sign with the street and a big arrow that points me to your garage sale.

My friend and I go EVERY weekend - and sometimes it's like trying to find an invisible garage sale.

2nd Thing - Price Points - if you can - have a $5 group of stuff/$10 group of stuff, etc. Put up signs - all tshirts .50. , Jeans $2 or whatever.

Make sure things are priced. It saves you alot of time.

Don't have clothes on the ground - put them on a table - or if you have hangers - hang them on a fence. They'll sell better.

If your doing it in your drive way - set up your 'checkout' spot at the END of the garage sale - not at the top. That way people have to go by you to get out. Helps you keep an eye on things.

Good luck! Hope you make a bundle.

Have cokes for sale (or water). You'll make a BUNDLE off of them. ;-)
If you plan to start your garage sale at 8am, have everything set up and ready by 7am. I had a garge sale advertised to start at 8 and I already had folks showing up and poking around at about 6:30 which was a pain. There is a whole group of folks out there that go to yard and garage sales super early to buy all the "good stuff" and then resell it on ebay.
Don't try to sell winter clothes. Clothes, unless baby clothes, are the hardest thing to sell.

Also, clean things off. Who wants to buy a dusty somethinganother.

I wouldn't have put a phone number in the paper.

One way to get a lot of business is to pre-sell. If you have any friends or family, let them know what you are selling and have them come by
just have fun with it, try to sell everything you put out there even if it means reducing prices sell lemonade or offer water have everything priced b4 setting out--sit back relax and make money -also make signs put around your neighbor hood and all incoming streets..
Make sure people can find you. Put up bright signs or streamers, ballons, or something else to draw attention to your sale. Have everything laid out the night before and priced so that you only have to put the tables out 1/2 hour ahead of time.

If you price things fairly, you should not have to cut the price too much. Go ahead and haggle, but come down less than requested.

Make sure someone is in charge of the money and is always watching it and keeping things straight.
