What's the proper way to lay new sod down?
Question:do i need topsoil? will i need to grade the area? it's roughly 20' x 20'.
have any tips on the best way to plan this out? other than constantly watering it, what else would i need to do the first few weeks after?

start on one side go across to the other side repeat til coverd
trim and cut to fit then water and feed once a day for a few days then cut down to water ever other day feed every other month dont mow this yr let it grow dont over water or feed level has much has you want remove any big rocks or sticks

yes, you need topsoil. good quality topsoil, 3-4" deep and leveled to near finished grade.
This can be a tough time of year to sod. It's hot and the grass will be under stress when you get it.. water, yes, but you don't want to have the soil soggy under the sod. Keep it moist, but not waterlogged. Water deeply, not just a little bit a couple times a day.
A half rate application of starter fertilizer might be a good idea to the soil, just before laying the sod. (half rate means if the spreader setting is 6 on the bag, set it on 3).
