How do you refinish end tables?

Question:My Mom gave me some end tables I would like to refinish, something I have never done before. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Answers:
well if you are going to totally refinish the tables you should strip all the varnish off with strypeese(paint and varnish stripper) and the best way to do so for varnish is to use steel wool and stripper and scrub the finish off(use gloves) the either wipe the excess stripper off with a rag or wash it off FAST..then use like 80 grit paper to take the scuffs out the use 120-180 grit to smooth it out, the if Ur going to stain it do that. then apply a few coats of varnish ,and sand in between coats of varnish with 250 grit or higher after the coat dries.don't sand the last coat

are they solid wood? or vainer? or are they painted?
