Skirting boards?

Question:If im replacing my council skirting boards with a new big ones, how do i do my hallway and stairs, i know how i would do the hallway part but is there a easier way to do the stairs? maybe i could leave the skirting there but how would i meet it on to the new one, or could i fit the large skirting in the hallway and then get a smaller piece to add on to the stairs part? i dont know how to explain it really but could someone help if they know what im chatting about?
Thanks

haven't you got washing up to do

The stairs I wouldnt touch, alhtough you could use a heat gun or something else to take the paint off them, as the skirting is part of the stairs themselves, as for the other skirting, well it's a case of taking them off putting the new ones on with a mix of glue like no more nails and Nails very easy to do and simple as most DIY places help with questions that you have
When you say skirting boards i think you may mean baseboard trim? The wood molding that goes down by the floor. If so theres a tool called an angle finder. An angle finder is a cheap thing that looks almost like a pocket knife but instead of a sharp blade this blade is dull and is places against the stairs on one side and the blade part is set to match the verticle edge of the hallway base trim. When you match the angle you tighten the screw and tranfer that mark to the stair base trim and make the cut. It will match up nicely to the hallway trim. This may seem alittle confusing but when you buy the tool ( About $5.00 ) you will see what i mean. Good luck, hope i helped!

To do the stairs you'd need to measure the riser and the tread and cut v type shapes tread one side and riser the other. Alternatively, you could cut the end of the hallway skirting board to notch onto the existing stair one, this would be like an inverted L but with the across line cut at an angle to match the angle of the stairs.

Hope that makes sense. Oh and I think the second option would probably be easiest.
the stairs don't usually have a skirting board, the hallway yes.
council jobs are nightmares you will probably find half the wall comes away when you take the old ones off. you could add a bit of wood but are you worried about the angle of the cut for the stairs. for this you need what is called a mitre saw and angle block to cut the appropriate angles. think they are about 40 quid in b&q for a rubbish one
For your 'flat area' skirtings (hall etc) get a Mitre saw from B&Q/ Focus/Wickes/homebase
http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/bq/nav/nav.js...
You must make 100% sure that your boards are vertical, otherwise the mitre joints will not match
For the stairs, if you must, you will see that the side to the wall has a square top, this is part of the stairs. Clean off perfectly to bare wood (burn & sand) Then, get your length of skirting board and cut off the top moulding so then it will match. Better, at this point to note that Homebase can do this... smile sweetly!!Look helpless...To joint this to the existing, locate the piece with dowel joints (not easy, but 'do-able') glue and sand to match.Any probs? Email is on my profile.
I can't remember seeing skirting board on stairs.
