I think I remember hearing some time ago that Ants will not cross a line of citranilla, I'd burn a citranilla candle as well.
You may be able to spray around your general area with a can of " Off" and there are other spray insect repellants that will guard an area of severl feet - circular area of 50 feet, I think.
This is safest if other animals will be running about, better than sprinking powders on the ground...
