I sanded my kitchen oak cabinets and sanded past the grain!! any ideas?
Question:I sanded my oak cabinets using a random orbit sander w/ 150 sandpaper per my handyman's instructions. I was over zealous and sanded past the grain in a couple of spots. I plan on refinishing these a light oak, but when I refinished the spot where I sanded past the grain, it was very noticeable. Any ideas? The area where i over sanded is about 2"x2" and is deep enough that you can see the grain is removed, but is not deep enough where it would classify as a "gouge".
Thanks much for any assistance! this is my 1st DYI project and it was fun

Yes, you can fix veneer quite easily.
Get a piece of 1/16 thick veneer, Then take a scissors and cut a spot similar in grain to the damage in an oval. If you dont have a local supply Look on net they sell that stuff quite reasonably. Or better yet, if you have a piece of veneer wood simply take a razor blade and losen up a couple square inches for the repair.
Then contact cement that onto the damage or use hot glue and a flat household iron with a rag under it and iron it on there flat.
Take a scraper and scrape that level. You can use a razor blade from utility knife held flat and square to scrape with.
You will be very surprised how easily this can be fixed.
Dont want to monkey around with repairig it, then go on line and buy a sheet of veneer with strippable paper on it and contact that right over the whole side of the cabinet or if its on the front, onto the whole front. That stuff runs about $10 for a 2 x 5 sheet of the stuff and goes on like walpaper onto a wall.
sorry there's really nothing you can do about that, and if it's not a gouge it shouldn't be that bad
Unless it's veneer you cannot sand past the grain. Real wood has grain through the entire piece of wood.
The cabinets must be veneer as you can't sand off the grain in solid wood. I would try using a darker stain and it might not be as noticeable. Another option is to add appliques if the spot where you sanded is central or perhaps the door pulls could be replaced here. I also think you may be able to do a paint and stain idea in a pattern. I have done this technique myself. You use paint first and then you stain over the whole area which helps to seal the paint as well. Good luck!
resand the surface using 120 g sand paper. sand it in the direction of the grains of your wood using hand
