What is the notch for at the end of a tape measure?

Question:Why is there a notch on the metal bit at the end? there is also a slit, what is that for too?

Answers:
Both the notch and the slit are designed to fit over a small nail set at the beginning point of a measurement. The notch sits on top of the shank of the nail with the back side of the hook grabbing on the head. In this case the nail is set parallel to the tape. The slot hooks over a nail head with the back of the hook catching on the shank and the nail set perpendicular to the tape.

to help u pull it out and so it dont coil into the plastic case
so you can hook the end on whatever your measuring and pull it out as you go further away from the start point
It helps you pull it out, and stops the end getting frayed. As that bit will come in to contact with rough surfaces, it needs to be strengthened.
It is to hook behind something to make it easier to measure.
The slot that allows the metal hook to "wiggle" allows for you to make an accurate measurement with the hook either inside of (wall to wall) or outside of (length of wood) your measuring surfaces... ;o)

Happy measuring.
The Notch just gives it a tooth like end so it grabs whatever you are trying to measure and the Slit would be so if you wanted to put a nail on what your measuring so your tape dont slip
It's for accurate readings.
If you push the tape against something to get a measurement, you would get a dfferent measurement if you hooked the tape if the notch was not there.

The notch allows the metal part to adjust for it's thickness difference.

Now, if you are talking about the hole in the tip itself, that is to hook on a nail.
The slit, as others say, is for hooking to a nail. The main purpose of that is in marking out a circle or a curve. Put the nail at the center point of the circle and hold your pencil on the tape at the desired radius.

The play in the metal hook is to compensate for the thickness of the hook, so that whether you are hooking the tape on something for an "outside" measuremwnt, or pushing it against something for an "inside" measurement, either way your measurement will be accurate.
It stops it sliding of the thing you are trying to measure
The bent bit at the end of the tape is for hooking over things - obviously! This pull the bent bit OUT
It has a slot in it which allows it to slide up and down the tape proper. When you push it up against something it slips IN and makes up for the thickness of the bent bit metal.
